Nordic Handscape Norway

Nordic Handscape Norway is a pilot project which is representing the Norwegian share of the investment by the Nordic Council of Ministers in the development of new ways of transmitting information about our cultural heritage using mobile phone technology. The project is a collaborative venture between the Norwegian Archive, Library and Museum Authority (ABM), The Restoration Workshop of Nidaros Cathedral (NDR), Klipp og Lim Media AS, and Telenor R&D. Overall responsibility for project management and completion rests with ABM, while NDR is accountable for the subject content. Klipp og Lim Media AS is responsible for the production and the creativity of the content. Telenor R&D is acting as technical adviser and will also contribute funding during the period of evaluation. Technical equipment such as servers, telephones, etc. are provided by the PATS Lab (sic) in Trondheim.

The pilot project centres on Nidaros Cathedral and the Archishop's Palace in Trondheim, with all the materials rich in the cultural history that the buildings and their surroundings represent. The aim is to create a multi-lingual mobile guide to the area, providing segments of the history, architecture and other information about the buildings and their surroundings. The project will look at new ways of transmitting knowledge and information that relate to our cultural heritage and will therefore also concentrate on evaluating the reactions of potential users to this type of communication.

A click on the "Pilot project" link at the top Left of the page will provide information on the progress of the Norwegian part of this project as it takes shape, and is implemented, tested and evaluated.

Mobile guide - the Archbishop's Palace

As of the 20th May, 2005, the basic technical infrastructure of the project has been determined, and various initial tests have been carried out with the help of Telenor R&D and four students of IC technology from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim. These include tests on transmission speeds, sound quality, location services, etc. Work is also progressing on the definition and presentation of the content to be included in the pilot project, with the focus emerging on the Archbishop's Palace and the building's cultural history. In addition, the process of structuring the information in relation to the content is well under way, along with the creation of a design adapted to the smaller format represented by mobile telephones.
